Moringa avocado pesto pasta

This is an epically nutritious pasta dish (yes they can exist!) and is made even more so by the addition of the moringa powder (very high in Vit K, so do not use if on blood thinners/pregnant) which you can’t even taste due to the combination of the other ingredients. The avocado in this recipe gives a lovely creaminess which is something most of us associate with an indulgent pasta, so you feel like you’re being naughty but are actually being nourished!

Raw choc moringa covered strawberries

A simple, classic treat with the option of the added twist of moringa* powder for an extra kick of nutrition for the health warriors (but trust me, you won’t taste it, I served these up to my family and they didn’t suspect a thing!).
*Do not use moringa if you’re pregnant-consult a doctor first

Even if you choose to leave out the moringa (in which case reduce the syrup to 1Tbspn) but make your own chocolate, this is still an awesome treat as the chocolate will then retain a lot of its goodness when compared to the heavily heated/processed varieties.

Bountiful Baobab Balls

I love baobab (pronounced bay-oh-bab) and after reading about the #MakeBaobabFamous attempt, I really wanted to promote it so that African families can get a better income.
Incase you don’t know what baobab is I’ll briefly describe it here.
Baobab is a powdered fruit that grows in Africa which tastes sweet and citrusy. Personally I find it so versatile as I can use it in porridge or smoothies and one of my favourites is mixing it with coconut oil and lemon juice to make a lovely citrusy baobab frostingThe biggest nutritional punch in this fruit is the Vitamin C and antioxidant capacity mainly found in the pulp. Per 10g of baobab (depending on the brand/batch) it has approx. 28-37% of your RDI of vitamin C!! The leaves and other parts of the fruit contain other nutrients eg. magnesium and calcium but it is mainly the pulp that forms most powders.

Remember, the more we demand good, natural products from companies the more the supply will have to increase, making it easier in the future for healthy products to be more readily available, plus you’ll be helping African families get a better income.

Healthier fifteens

These are a great little snack and you can easily manipulate them to suit your own tastes e.g choose white chocolate chips with cranberries or use different fruit such as fresh cherries, gojis or raisins. This recipe is healthier than the traditional as it doesn’t use any refined biscuits, condensed milk and omits the heavily processed cherries, with the replacement ingredients being a lot “cleaner” and with less refined sugar.

Superfood Safety

As I’ve developed a greater interest in health and increased my diet variety to include foods that give amazing flavour as well as nutrition, I have branched out into using a lot of new products. Many of which you will also be able to get from your standard supermarket today but over the years I have learnt a few tips on how to get the safest/best quality produce, which I’ve summarised below.
I’m still constantly learning about new brands/issues etc (as is the case in science and research) therefore this is a post which will probably be updated regularly as knowledge develops.

Cacao– buy organic, ask the brand if they test for heavy metals e.g cadmium, lead etc. If it is an EU brand then they must adhere to EU standards therefore they should already test for these.

Cinnamon- Most cinnamon sold in shops isn’t actually the real thing; instead it is cassia cinnamon with the true kind being called “Ceylon”. Cassia contains far more coumarin which can be dangerous when taken in large doses, although most people won’t eat enough cinnamon in one day to reach this level however to get the maximum bang for your buck and to ensure a better quality of cinnamon aim to purchase the real kind which can be bought from on line health stores.
