I wanted to share my favourite savoury snacks as I’ve recently come across quite a few which I really like and find helpful to have tucked away in a cupboard or bag (or desk drawer for anyone who has one) for when the munchies hit but you don’t want anything sweet or to open a tub of boiled eggs and risk stinking out the office or bus.

The problem I always came across in the past was that the only option I could really find was a fruit & nut bar, nothing wrong with them but for tooth friendly reasons sometimes I didn’t want something sweet but something savoury, so here’s my top picks.

Baked pea crisps
Where: Poundstretcher
Price: £1 for a bag of 5
I love these, they’re a great option made from peas, high fibre and source of protein and just with a pinch of salt and very affordable too!

Emily’s veg crisps
Where: Boots or Holland & Barrett
Price: £1.35-£1.39 for veg crisps £1.20 for sweet potato bag
In the mixed veg, the beetroot is my favourite crisp, plus they use responsibly sourced palm oil instead of standard sunflower oil which isn’t stable under high cooking temps so they’ve an edge over other brands in my opinion and a bag is 1/5 day. I’ve also recently come across their new product of sweet potato chips which include the purple variety too which is great as they’re even higher in anthocyanins than the orange versions & it’s these compounds which are often linked to a lot of health benefits.
I’d prefer them to be less crunchy but for anyone with good gnashers you’ll be fine.

Pili nuts
Where: Holland & barrett or online
Price: RRP £1.99
For anyone who follows me on instagram, you’ll know how much I love these. Pili nuts are high in vitamin E and magnesium and these ones are activated meaning they’re easier to digest plus it also gives them a much creamier texture. I’ve tried the ones with a pinch of pink Himalayan salt and the turmeric ginger ones. Big thumbs up from me!

Innate Foods veg snacks
Where: Online & some health food stores/sainsburys
Price: £1.35-£1.60
I love the combo of onion powder and beetroot in these snacks, it’s so good, they also do a butternut squash and spinach version but the beetroot is my favourite. They are grain free (paleo too) for anyone with a sensitive digestion/gut.

Eat Real salted hummus or chilli lemon lentil crisps
Where: Holland & Barrett or Pound stretcher
Price: varies depending on shop but roughly 85p
These are delicious, regarding the chilli lemon lentil version, I’d prefer them without the maltodextrin as this ingredient is high GI but there’s only a pinch in the lemon juice powder & the other ingredients are fine, plus I don’t eat them everyday so as far as flavoured crisp options go they’re quite decent. They’re also a cheap, accessible option for anyone on the go who needs a bite and are amazing with hummus!
A note on this brand, some versions/flavours use sugar as well as standard sunflower oil which I prefer to avoid in baked goods, so be careful what flavours you choose if you’re looking to avoid these, in which case the salted hummus ones are the best option.

Kale chips
Where: Online, health food stores or Holland & Barrett
Price: £1.99
I love a good kale chip as it’s such a great way to get this much hated veg into your diet. I find that store bought ones don’t stink out the place the way my homemade ones do, I’m not sure why so if I don’t want to offend people I just buy ones and save the homemade version for when it’s just me in the house!

Vac pack chestnuts & garlic oil
Where: any big supermarket
Price: Between £1-£1.99 depending on offers
The St Dalfour and Merchant gourmet vac pack chestnuts are the ones I usually get, these are lovely with some garlic infused oil. This may seem like a weird one but you should at least try it once, it’s so good, so healthy and a great option that isn’t crisps! See, they’re not just for Christmas time.

Coconut chips
Where: HB, Tesco, Sainsburys
Price: £1-£1.50
I’ve become really addicted to these, especially toasted versions as that adds even more flavour, they’re lightly crunchy and count as 1/5 day, can also be easily popped into a lunchbox or bag.

Fava beans
Where: I’ve found these in Pound stretcher and big supermarkets
Price: £1- £2 (higher price tends to be in supermarket
These are a great little snack for kids lunchboxes, they’re crunchy, lightly salted and flavoured with garlic & onion powder but in my opinion the packs are very small so unless I’m eating other stuff then I’ll have more than 1 pack at a time lol!
